Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD) anybody have trouble with this?

Good afternoon.

I've just put two loaves in to bake and now I'm having lunch whilst listening to Jeremy Vine. (Eating an uber un-healthy Pot Noodle but what hurts now and then?)

Current subject is as the title of this post. I have, of course, heard of it before. I do feel very sorry for people suffering from this condition. My favourite times of the year are Autumn and November. I love the drawing in of the nights, comfort food, closing the curtains early and lighting the fire at about 3pm so all is cozy when my men come home; somebody on the radio described the dark days as mushroom sky.

I know the last couple of weeks here in Wales we have had rain and wind of biblical proportions, but I have to say that as long as we and the dog are indoors safe and we are not making unnecessary journeys then we are ok.

It really is some sort of mental health issue though as people report having suffered from depression before the SAD is diagnosed.

I have always been quite a positive and up beat kind of person and not really susceptible to periods of darkness.

As I said, I have realy sympathy for those who find the darker months of the year a real chore to deal with.

Does anybody have trouble with this or know anybody?

  1. no, and no. I'm glad I don't suffer from it, or know anyone who does. I know people who just don't like winter, but not have an actual disorder.

I love a pot noodle. I was eyeing them up in the supermarket this morning, then decided to get a salad instead. in hindsight the pot noodle would have been the better choice! ;o)

  2. I do. It's not that I don't *like* the long nights and battening down the hatches, Autumn and Winter were always my favourite seasons. But daylight is in very short supply here in Orkney at this time of year. Since moving here, and quite against my better judgement, I have found myself spiralling downwards during the long Winter. I now use a SAD light, and this year for the first time, I'm taking a vitamin D supplement - which appears to be making a vast difference - I haven't had to resort to the SAD light at all yet this year :-)

    1. Wanda, I can totally appreciate the kind of light and dark you have. My family and I were thinking at one point of moving to Lewis and I'm sure we would have completely understood what you mean first hand. Lovely to have a new person reading my blog. Thank you.x

  3. I had cravings for Pot Noodle when I was pregnant with my first child, now the very sight of them make me feel a little ill! I've not been affected by SAD I like the hunkering down of the short nights, this time of year must be very difficult for the people who are affected especially as it has been so gloomy lately x

  4. It may seem rather strange but I think I suffer from reverse SAD. I detest the summer and feel totally bogged down in both mood and health when it's hot and sunny. Once autumn arrives I am like a different person. My moods change dramatically and I feel much healthier in the cooler weather. I love the early dark and the cosyness of the house and once the Christmas lights are up I am in my element.

    1. Ooh you sound like my kind of girl, Sheila. I don't like the heat much and hope that this next summer will be the last time we go abroad for a few years now we have moved to wonderful Wales. I look forward to summers here!

    2. A holiday abroad in the heat is my idea of hell. When I can afford it I go New York for the first week of December hoping for snow and consoling myself with a bit of festive shopping if we don't get any :) The last time I went it snowed the week after I'd been........I were dead miffed...lol.

  5. I do, and yet I love autumn and winter. I was really badly affected though, for some years. This year I was gifted a fabulous light - I put it on in the morning for half to one hour, while I am busy in the kitchen doing breakfasts and lunches etc, and cannot tell you how miraculous it is!
I am an outdoor person and despite being out in all weathers, I think my brain just does need the extra light. I can totally recommend these lights!
